With freistilbox, you get much more than “a server”. Our managed hosting platform consists of a multitude of services running on different machines, but integrated into a sophisticated hosting architecture. Built-in redundancy on many levels allows you to scale your websites’ performance and optimize their reliability. However, you don’t have to deal with the complexity that comes with such a powerful infrastructure because our web operations experts take care of everything behind the scenes.
These are the main components of the freistilbox managed hosting platform:
Edge Router: Edge Routers receive incoming HTTP requests and forward them to the appropriate freistilbox clusters. They also handle TLS encryption, which takes computational load off the rest of the platform.
Application Boxes: Your web applications run on one or more application servers, or “boxes” for short. The scalability and reliability made possible by running multiple Application Boxes is a feature other hosting providers only offer in their Enterprise plans, if at all. On freistilbox, it is already included in our Pro plans.
Content Cache: In front of each freistilbox cluster, there is a Content Cache. It acts as a load balancer by distributing incoming requests between the available Application Boxes. If possible, the Content Cache also stores delivered content in RAM for a specified time. This allows it to respond to subsequent requests for the same content within microseconds, and without involving any of the Application Boxes behind it.
Shell Box: To give you manual access to your website’s asset files and the opportunity to do a remote login and execute commands directly in the freistilbox environment, a dedicated box is part of your freistilbox cluster especially for these purposes.
Cluster Services: We offer optional upgrades that extend the performance and capabilities of your freistilbox Cluster, for example to speed up content search or lower database load.
Platform Services: By sharing the services that put the highest demands on performance and availability between freistilbox Clusters, we can provide our customers with an exceptional level of quality at minimal cost. These platform services include high-performance databases and super-reliable file storage.
